Nameless Sound was established in 2001 to present the best of international contemporary music and to support the exploration of new methods in arts education.

Nameless Sound presents concerts by premier artists in the world of creative music. In addition, Nameless Sound artists work directly with students from Houston’s public schools, community centers, and homeless shelters. Nameless Sound’s educational work helps to nurture a new generation of artists and inspire tomorrow’s creative thinkers.

Dear Friends,

Knowledge transfer, creative work, therapy, and play: these are the intended outcomes of collaborative music improvisation in a Nameless Sound workshop. And every day, as we continue year-round sessions with youth all over Houston, our dedication to this work feels more critical than ever before.

The past year tested our resolve in the face of hateful rhetoric that now forges ahead as policy. We watched the crosshairs of this rhetoric focus on the young people we work with every day: immigrants, Muslim refugees, people with special needs, and homeless youth, most of whom are susceptible to the discrimination that targets people of color. In their resilience, these exceptional kids taught us so much about hope and creativity. Conscious, focused, responsive, and effective service to them feels more urgent than ever before.

There are many efforts worthy of your support. But please know that if you donate to Nameless Sound, you are taking part in a project that is direct, efficient and local in its impact. Without the weight of excess administration, Nameless Sound sees almost 200 kids per week, in 19 weekly sessions. These are collaborative and interactive workshops that serve almost 2,000 kids per year, all with an annual education budget of less than $100,000.

Every single donation to Nameless Sound, large and small, makes a difference. Please consider a donation of any amount online or give us a call.

And don’t forget that in sustaining Nameless Sound you are also supporting concerts by some of the world’s most creative, visionary, and pioneering musicians who would not otherwise come to our city. Join us as we conclude our 15th season with two special and significant events. One of the most emotionally moving artists in the music, Joe McPhee, has been a Houston favorite since he closed our inaugural season in 2002. On May 24, Joe will perform at Spring Street Studios with his trio Survival Unit III. Then on May 27, we pay tribute to our mentor Pauline Oliveros, one of the most innovative experimental artists of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Her philosophy of Deep Listening was expressed through teachings, writings, music and technical innovations that influenced people around the world. She was also Houston’s native daughter. Our memorial for Pauline, who passed on Thanksgiving Day, falls just a few days short her 85th birthday. Nameless Sound owes everything to her work and leadership. We hope that you can join us in celebrating this remarkable person, born and raised in our own city.

Deeply Listening,

David Dove
